Salvete V'omnes!

The busy Latin competition season is underway! The Area F Latin Tournament is

coming up February 24 and 25 at Westwood High School (12400 Mellow

Meadow Drive, Austin, TX 78750). Area F is made up of a number of events

including multiple-choice tests on subjects like Latin Grammar, derivatives,

mythology, and Roman daily life, etc. There are also athletic “Olympika” events

and team sports, as well as creative and art contests. Area F is an excellent

opportunity for your student to use some of the Latin knowledge he or she has

acquired and compete in a fun way against students of the same level from around

the city. Winners receive ribbons, certificates, and sometimes medals and

scholarships in honor of their accomplishments! Competition in JCL Latin events

—whether you win or lose— looks very good on scholarship and college

applications, and it brings greater depth and meaning to an already robust

curriculum. We hope your student will participate in this event. WHS has always

done very well in the past, and we look forward to doing as well or better in the

future with your help.

Certamen players are the only people who need to come on both Friday and

Saturday. All others will come only on Saturday morning and may leave as soon

as their events are finished, or they may choose to stay until the awards ceremony

at 4 pm. Each student is responsible for his/her transportation to and from the

tournament as well as finding lunch. Dress is casual and, once we are at the

school, we will be told where to meet. Visit the competition website for a

Certamen Players Only:

WHS will have a brief practice from 4-4:30. After that, the team will eat dinner at

a place to be determined. Parents are also invited to attend! Students will also

have to bring their own money for this. After we eat, we will go to Westwood

High School at 6:00. If you are not eating with the team, you will also need to be

at Rouse by 6:00.
